The Ph.D. degree constitutes the third cycle of education provided for in the Italian academic system and enables the acquisition of the skills necessary to carry out highly qualified research activities at universities, public institutions and private entities. 

The duration of the course is normally 36 months.

The call for admission to the course is published each year at the beginning of the summer.

The degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) is awarded after discussion of the final thesis.
